Former national ace Ekiring donates playing gear to Play of Hope Badminton Academy Gayaza

Former Uganda national badminton player and two times Olympian Edwin Ekiring has continued to support the growth of badminton talents in the country by donating equipment to the Play of Hope badminton academy in Gayaza.

Ekiring, now a coach-cum-player in the Luxembourg Badminton Club European delivered equipment ranging from over 50 pairs of shoes, 100 rackets, nets, shuttles as well as jerseys and water bottles to aid youngsters at the Gayaza based academy which has about 65 youngsters playing the sport.

“It is important for the children to believe that there are some people out there who think of them and wish them the best. Clubs in Netherlands, Luxembourg and Germany offered the items.” Ekiring

Annet Nakamya, the academy head revealed that shortage of equipment is a major issue affecting many badminton players in the country.

She also revealed that this equipment will also be shared with youngsters elsewhere in a bid to develop the badminton sport.

“We are happy that Edwin Ekiring has brought a lot of hope to the youngsters. He (Ekiring) has never forgotten where he came from. We shall use some and also extend others to the rest of the players. We are happy to the other donors who have offered” Nakamya remarked.

Parents and children from the academy lauded Ekiring for the overwhelming support to the sport of badminton that will see them better their talents in the sport.

 “We thank Ekiring who has provided the sports equipment which will help the children develop further in the game of badminton” Julian Nahuma, a parent revealed.

Ekiring is a two times Olympian and he also took part in four Commonwealth Games editions while still playing for the national badminton team.
